Cycling vs rollerblades: which of these burns more calories?

The warm weather is finally here and that means it's time to take our rollerblades and bikes for a walk in the park. Both activities are great and will improve your health and your state of mind, and of course will help you lose some calories. But which of these two sport activities helps you get rid of more calories? This is what we wanted to find out and after some research, here are the results.

Roller blades or a bicycle?

First of all let's get one thing straight: whatever sport you choose to practice, it should be one that you enjoy and one that will motivate you to get out of your home and go to the park.

Both rollerblading and cycling bring many benefits for your health especially when it comes to your cardiovascular system. If your goal is to lose weight, than you should take into consideration your daily calories intake. Equally is just as important to think about which muscles you want to work on. Knowing that will help you to emphasize on certain group muscles when you exercise.

Let the calories speak

According to the American Council of Exercise a person weighing 75 kilograms/ 165 pounds consumes about 374 calories while rollerblading in a relaxed pace. The same person will burn on a bike about 136 calories while going slowly (10 km/ h), 272 at a moderate pace (30km/ h) and 408 calories if he is pedaling with speed (40km/ h).

So it's up to you which activity is best, but looking at the numbers, we can say that the rollerblading wins this competition, because you can relax in the park and lose many calories with not that much of an effort.

What about your muscles?

So, when you go both rollerblading and cycling, you use your lower body muscles, but different groups.

Cycling involves using your thigh and calf muscles while rollerblading will use more muscles since you need to swing, brake and keep your balance. Also this sport involves a lot a work in your hip area, so if you have problems with the joints, better choose the bike.

How to decide between rollerblades and bike

Now that you know the numbers, you can choose the activity you like the most. You should also pick the one that you feel more secure with and the one that motivates you.

All you have to do is get up from your sofa, go to the park and have some fun!
